What Are the Sunnah Prayers in Islam
Sunnah prayers are the voluntary acts of worship performed by Muslims to seek Allah’s pleasure and follow the example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. These prayers bring peace, forgiveness, and closeness to Allah. Understanding and practicing Sunnah prayers helps strengthen faith and improves one’s connection with the Creator.
What Are Sunnah Prayers?
In Islam, Sunnah prayers (also called Nafl or voluntary prayers) are those which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ performed regularly in addition to the five daily obligatory (Fard) prayers. They are not compulsory, but performing them carries great reward and skipping them brings no sin — though missing them regularly may reduce one’s spiritual benefit.
Types of Sunnah Prayers
There are two main types of Sunnah prayers:
- Sunnah Mu’akkadah (Emphasized Sunnah): Regularly performed by the Prophet ﷺ and rarely missed.
- Sunnah Ghair Mu’akkadah (Non-Emphasized Sunnah): Occasionally performed and recommended.
Sunnah Prayers Connected to the Five Daily Salah
Every obligatory prayer has Sunnah prayers attached to it. These add spiritual value and complete the reward of Fard prayers.
1. Sunnah Before Fajr (Dawn Prayer)
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The two rak‘ahs before Fajr are better than the world and all that it contains.” (Muslim) Only two units (rak‘ahs) are prayed before Fajr. They are Sunnah Mu’akkadah — highly emphasized and never to be missed.
2. Sunnah with Dhuhr (Noon Prayer)
Four rak‘ahs before Dhuhr and two after are Sunnah Mu’akkadah. The Prophet ﷺ consistently performed these, and they bring immense blessings to one’s day.
3. Sunnah with Asr (Afternoon Prayer)
There are four rak‘ahs before Asr (Sunnah Ghair Mu’akkadah). Although not emphasized, they are recommended. Prophet ﷺ said: “May Allah have mercy on one who prays four before Asr.” (Abu Dawood)
4. Sunnah with Maghrib (Evening Prayer)
After the three obligatory rak‘ahs of Maghrib, two Sunnah rak‘ahs are offered. These are Sunnah Mu’akkadah and were always performed by the Prophet ﷺ.
5. Sunnah with Isha (Night Prayer)
After the obligatory Isha prayer, two Sunnah rak‘ahs are prayed. Additionally, one can perform Witr prayer afterward, which the Prophet ﷺ never left — some scholars even consider it Wajib (necessary).
Special Sunnah and Nafl Prayers
Beyond daily Sunnah prayers, Islam encourages special voluntary prayers that hold unique rewards.
1. Witr Prayer
Offered after Isha, the Witr prayer is odd-numbered (1, 3, 5, or more rak‘ahs). The Prophet ﷺ said, “Make Witr your last prayer at night.” (Bukhari)
2. Tahajjud Prayer
Performed in the last part of the night before Fajr, Tahajjud is one of the most beloved prayers to Allah. It brings forgiveness and peace. The Qur’an says: “And during the night, wake up and pray as an extra for you — it may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.” (Qur’an 17:79)
3. Duha (Forenoon) Prayer
Also known as Salat al-Ishraq or Salat al-Duha, this prayer is performed after sunrise until before Dhuhr. It brings blessings to one’s livelihood. Prophet ﷺ said: “In the morning, charity is due from every joint, and two rak‘ahs of Duha suffice for all that.” (Muslim)
4. Sunnah of Entering and Leaving the Mosque
When entering the mosque, pray two short rak‘ahs called Tahiyyatul Masjid — “the greeting of the mosque.” These are Sunnah and show respect to the house of Allah.
5. Istikhara Prayer
Salat al-Istikhara is the Sunnah prayer for seeking guidance from Allah when making important decisions. The Prophet ﷺ taught it to his companions as he taught a surah from the Qur’an. It brings clarity and peace of mind.
6. Salat al-Tawbah
Whenever one commits a sin, praying two rak‘ahs of repentance (Tawbah) is highly recommended. It wipes out sins if performed sincerely.
7. Sunnah of Travel (Safar) Prayer
When beginning or returning from a journey, the Prophet ﷺ used to pray two rak‘ahs — seeking Allah’s protection and gratitude for safe travel.
Benefits of Performing Sunnah Prayers
- Brings one closer to Allah and earns His love.
- Completes deficiencies in obligatory prayers.
- Brings tranquility and spiritual strength.
- Leads to forgiveness and rewards in the Hereafter.
- Follows the beautiful example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Practical Tips to Start Sunnah Prayers
1. Start Small
Begin with the two Sunnah before Fajr, as they are short and highly rewarded.
2. Be Consistent
The Prophet ﷺ said, “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if small.” (Bukhari)
3. Learn the Intentions (Niyyah)
Make clear intentions before each Sunnah — it increases focus and sincerity.
4. Make Dua After Sunnah Prayers
Use the peaceful moments after Sunnah prayers to ask Allah for guidance, success, and forgiveness.
Conclusion
Sunnah prayers are a gift — a chance to earn extra reward, peace, and closeness to Allah. By performing them regularly, we follow the path of our beloved Prophet ﷺ and strengthen our faith. Begin with small steps, stay consistent, and you’ll soon find the spiritual beauty of these prayers illuminating your daily life.
